The latest census has just been completed by the Department of Conservation and Auckland Council staff and volunteers in Auckland’s Hunua Ranges.
In 2014, the number of Kokako breeding pairs was 55 – in 2018 has now reached 106 breeding pairs, making it the 5th largest population of Kokako in New Zealand!
The Kokako Recovery Group set an objective to see 50 breeding pairs in the Hunua Ranges by 2020 – so what an amazing achievement.
It’s been a real privilege for us to get involved in the volunteer programme this year – we’ve already learned so much from the project team and other volunteers. It’s very humbling to meet such incredibly passionate people who have given up countless hours of their time to assist in the programme.
We aim to be involved ourselves for many more years to come!
If you’d like to learn how you can get involved, email Jacqui – but be warned! This volunteering is not for the faint hearted! You must have a good level of fitness and outdoor confidence, and be prepared to commit to regular attendance.
